Why We Have a California Prop 65 Warning on our Herbal Teas & Tinctures

Most companies include a California Prop 65 warning on their herbal teas & tinctures even when levels of heavy metals or listed chemicals are below the legal thresholds.

Why This Happens

• California’s Prop 65 law requires this even if the product only contains trace, naturally occurring amounts of substances like lead or cadmium.

• The thresholds are extremely low — for example:

 • Lead: 0.5 micrograms per daily serving

 • Cadmium: 4.1 micrograms

• These are often exceeded by everyday foods like spinach, sweet potatoes, or turmeric grown in mineral-rich soil.

California Prop 65 Warning:

Some of our products, including herbal teas & tinctures, may contain naturally occurring trace amounts of heavy metals (like lead or cadmium) found in soil. These elements are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

This warning is provided in accordance with California’s Proposition 65 law, which has extremely strict standards—even for naturally occurring substances found in fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Kingdom Come Home - Remnant Beauty Cosmetics - Clean Beauty Without Compromise

At Kingdom Come Home, all of our products are upheld to European beauty standards, which are among the strictest in the world. While the United States bans or restricts only around 11 ingredients in cosmetics, the European Union has banned or restricted over 1600 substances to protect human health. These include ingredients identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, endocrine-disrupting, or otherwise harmful to the skin or body.

The EU standards also regulate the safe concentration limits of approved ingredients.

For Example:

• Essential oils and natural fragrances must be used below specific thresholds to prevent allergic reactions often between 0.01% and 1% depending on the compound.

• Preservatives like phenoxyethanol are limited to 1% or less. At Kingdom Come Home, the only time we ever use phenoxyethanol is when it is absolutely critical to uphold the integrity of a product to protect it from mold harmful bacteria, or contaminants. If a formula can be preserved safely without it, we eliminate it altogether.

• Colorants, UV filters, and other additives are strictly reviewed for purity, sourcing, and safe use levels.

Essential Oils

Essential oils originate from natural sources, including plants, herbs, and flowers, which are typically extracted via steam distillation. This process entails heating the components until gas is released, followed by condensation of the gas back into a liquid. As a gentle process, it prevents the degradation of sensitive compounds. Unlike natural fragrances, essential oils use every aroma component of the plant.

Natural Fragrance Oils

Our formulations incorporate natural fragrance oils, derived from natural sources including fruits and flowers. The fragrance creation process involves isolating aromatic compounds from plants, yielding isolated aromatic chemicals called isolates. These isolates are then blended with others sourced from diverse plants. This enables the fragrance to be categorized as a natural product, featuring a more sophisticated profile than essential oils.

Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are synthetic. They’re made with a mix of aroma chemicals and natural ingredients like extracts, essential oils, and resins. We choose to only use Phthalate + Paraben Free Fragrance Oils for the health and safety of our customers. They are free of the 624 carcinogens and 323 reproductive/developmental toxins listed under California’s Prop 65 act.

The IFRA, or International Fragrance Association, has conducted comprehensive safety evaluations of the fragrance oils we use, scrutinizing the constituent elements of each oil in the blend. While this rigorous testing is costly, labor-intensive, and time-consuming, it ensures the safety and quality of the products we offer.

Even though our fragrance oils contain plant-based components, they’re still considered synthetic and cannot be listed as natural on a label.
